What is icanbewell.ca?

It is a digital solution to improve health care. 30-70% of health problems can be prevented. This webapp puts reliable information to stay healthy in the hand of every Canadian. It is intended for residents of Canada only, as health recommendations change depending on the country you live in. Watch the video on this page to see how to use the app.

For the publicTake charge of your health! Check the app to see what you need to do at your age to stay healthy. Information on the app is backed by research. We provide links to tools and videos. You can find what tests you need to do to detect cancer or other conditions early, before they become difficult to treat. Check the app before you see your primary health care provider so you can discuss what’s right for you.

For health care providersThis app will save you time. Search for up-to-date evidence-based recommendations in prevention and screening with links to the source. The app provides a bilingual interface for patients and providers. Do you want to explain a preventive maneuver to a patient? User-friendly calculators, tools and videos will help. These can be shared with the patient before, during or after an appointment.

Apps in healthcare

Many countries are using health apps and electronic resources to help patients access information and change their health behaviours more quickly. Some examples are the Netherlands, Germany, France and the UK.

Our Background

icanbewell.ca was developed by Dr. Cleo Mavriplis in collaboration with a team of Engineering and Computer Science students from University of Ottawa, primary health care providers, family medicine residents, and researchers. Dr. Mavriplis is a family physician with interests in preventive care, equity in access to health care, and medical education. She is Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine, University of Ottawa and Adjunct Professor, Department of Family Medicine, McGill University.

Grants:Initial phase of the app was supported by a PRIME grant from the Department of Family Medicine of University of Ottawa (Primary Care Research in Innovation and Medical Education). The programming and technological development was supported by an NSERC grant called create-best
